The Weather Week

Today we had a field trip that came to us!  It was called Weather or Not and a scientist from High Touch High Tech came to our classroom. We did lots of fun experiments!! We learned that if you put a string in ice water and sprinkle salt on the string that the string will freeze onto the ice.  Another experiment was powder that we added water to and it turned to snow.  There was an electric ball that we got to touch. Johanna’s twinkle toe shoes lit up when she touched the ball!  We got to see how tornados work by spinning bottles. We learned that tornados move fastest at the bottom.  Everyone got to see how strong air is by using suction cups.

This week we shared weather interest projects! We learned about world climate from Yash, Miyu, and Caleb. Shreyas showed the classed a technological presentation on natural disasters. Thomas and Thea gave weather reports like meteorologists. Kasey, Pravar, Jessica, Joyce, and Anu taught us about the water cycle. We even learned a song to help us remember the parts of the water cycle. We got to try rain sticks with Nicole, and Johanna. We listened to books about weather written by Johanna, Derek, and Kayla. Next week, Iyad, Jason, and Mihir will read us their weather comics.

We started writing May Wiki stories this week. First, we worked in groups to look up some of the vocabulary words we did not know. The groups got to make moodboards on the ipads to teach the rest of the class about that word.  We are excited to work on our stories next week!

There was so spelling or Treasures story this week. We had a review week and got to work on a review to do list.

Have a super weekend!

Last Week’s News

Happy Mother’s Day Yesterday! Here is last week’s news from room 29.

Last Monday we had an assembly. Librarians named Lisa and Lisa from the Vernon Area Library came to Tripp School. They told us about this summers reading club. The theme is Reading is Delicious. The librarians were very funny.

In Science we did lots of experiments! We all made balloon rockets.  There were four chairs and the chairs were connected with a string. On the string was a straw with a plastic bag. Everyone got to pump up a balloon and put it in the bag. We raced the balloon rockets. We found out that the more air you put in the faster and farther the balloon will go.

We read the story, The Moon By Seymour Simon. The book was expository nonfiction about the moon. It had great pictures and information!

We also talked about personification and imagery. Personification is when you give a nonliving thing human like features. For example, the sun greeted us. Imagery is when you get a picture in your mind when reading.

Last week we worked on mother’s day gifts. We all wrote books about why we love our moms. Each book had 10 reasons why. We all wrote gift from the heart coupons. Some of us were very generous! Everyone made bookmarks too! Mrs. Guntly put our pictures on the bookmarks. We also made cards.

Your Mother Loving 2nd Graders

The Weather Week

On Monday, we started our weather interest group projects. There are different groups in our class learning about different things related to weather. The groups in our class are: water cycle, weather world map, rain sticks, weather comics, technological presentation, weather book, and follow three meteorologists.

On Tuesday, we celebrate Thea’s birthday. We went out side for extra recess!

On Thursday, our class went to the Smoke House. We talked about safety and what to do when there is a fire. There was a fake house and we went in the house. Then there was fake smoke. We practiced evacuating the house safely when there was a fire.

In science we started learning about air. We know that air has pressure, air is everywhere, air takes up space, we need air, air is a gas, air moves things, and hot air rises cold air sinks. We did air experiments to show that air has pressure. We put a paper towel into a vial and put it straight underwater and the towel stayed dry.

We did MAP testing this week. On Tuesday we had the reading test. Today we had the math test.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Guntly’s Weather Kids

The Flat Fun Week

This week our flat selves for our Flat Stanley project started to return to school. Some of the people that returned were: Miyu from Japan, Jessica from China, Kayla from Denver, Thea from Atlanta, Caleb from Pennsylvania, Joyce from Boston, Derek from Canada, Iyad from Bangladesh, Yash from Florida, and Kasey from Missouri. We are still waiting for some flat friends to return from their adventure.

We had a field trip to the bank. At the bank we learned about money, learned how to write checks, got to see the safe, see how money and coins are counted fast with a machine, and learned how the people who work there do the drive through.  We got to send stuff through the drive through tube. Some of the stuff we sent was, dog treats, candy, lollipops, and fake checks. After the trip was over, everyone got lollipops and some games.

This week we had Art in Action. We learned about mosaic art. Everyone made birds out of small pieces of paper. All of the birds were different and beautiful!!

We had two birthday choices this week for Kasey and Mihir. We love birthday choice!

The class started typing April Wiki stories. Everyone did his or her own story this month.  Some of us finished our stories and posted them online. You can read them on the writing wiki: April_.html

Other people will finish typing their story next week. Be sure to check back next week for more stories.

Johanna was the star of the week. She brought in lots of great pictures to share. We learned that she has a little sister, her favorite movie is Tangled, her favorite food is tomato soup, she likes to help mom in the kitchen, and she likes to watch TV!

Love,

Mrs. Guntly’s Flat Class

The Fun and Busy Week

Our class went to an assembly. The man that talked at the assembly used a shark, a duck, and a dragon puppet. The puppets were hilarious!! He told us a few stories about his childhood when a boy named Brian bullied him. The man talked about bullying and what you should do if you get bullied or see someone getting bullied. He also did a few magic tricks.

Our class went on a field trip to Raupp Museum. We got to milk a pretend cow. The class learned about what it was like in the olden days on a farm. One hundred years people had to trade farm goods to bye things. This is called bartering. Everyone got to try trading goods for different goods. We worked in groups and got different stories. For our stories we had to make a shopping list to see what we had enough money to buy. We used fake eggs for trading.

We finished our continent research! Today, groups started sharing what they found out about their continent. Groups researched every continent expect for Antarctica

The class read Dig Wait Listen in Treasures. We learned about Spade foot toads.

Welcome Back From Spring Break!!

This week was a review week.  During a review week we don’t have spelling!  We have a review week every 5 weeks.  Everyone has been working on a To-Do List. A To-Do List has lots of different learning activities. One of the activities is a lap book. In the book is all the phonics and grammar that we learned in Unit 4. We did contractions in the lap book.

The class is working in small groups to learn about a continent.  We are researching all of the continents except Antarctica.  Each group is making a map of their continent.  Next week, we will share our research.

Something new we started this week is Podcasts. A podcast is a video slideshow of pictures showing the things that we learned and did each day this week. You can see our daily podcast at:

tes2guntly11

Yesterday in math we had our Unit 7 test. We are starting Unit 9 next. Everyone will stay in Mrs. Guntly’s room for Unit 9. Unit 9 is mostly about measurement.

Happy Spring

Happy first day of Spring on Tuesday, March 20th!

We all wrote super storm stories. We compared and contrasted two super storms. The storms that we got to choose from were: thunderstorm, blizzard, hail, tornado, and hurricane.

Today is Lalit’s last day in room 29.  He is moving to New Jersey.  We are sad that Lalit is leaving.  We have a super secret surprise for Lalit!

Our class listened to a new story called, Nutik the Wolf Pup.

We started a new thing instead of Rocket Math called Math Facts in a Flash.  The new program is on the computers.  We go to the computer lab in room 7 to do our practices and tests. The computer lab is by the library.

The second grade classes mailed their flat selves to friends and family around the world.

Today we are super cozy in our pajamas for pajama day!

Happy Spring Break!

The Beautiful Week

We had two birthdays to celebrate!! Happy birthday to Lalit and Anu!

This week we learned about storms.  We read the book Super Storms and did a trifold about it. A trifold is when we answer questions about the story.  Asking and answering questions helps us better understand the story.  Next week, we will compare and contrast two different super storms in writing.

Everyone started making a flat version of themselves.  Next week, we will mail our flat people to friends and family that live in different places. We are excited to send our flat selves in the mail!

We learned about book circles.  In book circles a small group reads the same book.  Everyone in the group has a job to do.  This week, we did a book circle as a whole class. Mrs. Guntly read the story, Thank you Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco.  We got to practice the six different book club jobs.  The book club jobs are: discussion director, wacky word finder, cool connector, artful artist, passage performer, and super storyteller.  After spring break, we will work in small book circle groups reading different books by Patricia Polacco.

Have a great weekend!

George Washington Project

The students in room 29 are George Washington experts! Over the past few weeks the girls and boys researched and collected information on the different parts of George Washington’s life.  Students are holding their fact filled flip books that they worked very hard on.

The Mixed Up Week

We had a great week with the nice weather each day!

The class wrote their own fraction number stories that went with the theme of St. Patrick’s Day.  All of the stories had coins in them. Today, we shared our stories with a friend and solve each others fraction story problem.  We all wrote very tricky stories.

We finally finished making our George Washington flip books!  Each flip book has information about George’s childhood, term as president, military career, family life, and other interesting facts.  We turned our flipbooks into mini paper George Washington’s.  Mrs. Guntly will be posting a picture of us with our projects soon.

We had a switched around week because of 3rd and 4th grade testing.  We had math in the morning and daily 5 and language arts in the afternoon.  During Daily 5 we do read to self, read to someone, word work, writing, and listen to reading.  During language arts we read stories out of our Treasure’s books, practice grammar, and meet with Mrs. Guntly.

We read the story Flat Stanley. After reading the story, we found out that we are going to do a Flat Stanley project instead of a book report this month! We are going to make our own flat people and send them to someone we know that lives in another state or country.  We can’t wait to start the project!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Guntly’s Leprechauns
