This week, in 2nd grade, we had a fun and busy week! On Monday, we had our field trip to Meridian where we worked with a class of 6th graders. We made some great new friends. On Tuesday, we had HighTech HighTouch scientists teach us about weather. We loved it! We made snow, touched clouds, and swirled water to make a tornado. On Wednesday, we were busy getting ready for Portfolio Night – thanks to all those who came to visit! On Thursday, we had a great visit from Vernon Area Library telling us all about their summer reading program – sounds great and hope that everyone gets involved. On Friday, we had our Art in Action. We made orange tie-dyed shirts that we will wear on field day, which is Wednesday.

In Language Arts, we have been finishing up talking about “articles” (a, an) that we learned about last week. We also learned what the word onomatopeia means –it is the use of a word, such as buzz or swoosh, that sounds like the object or action it refers to. We had no spelling this week since we have been doing this week into two weeks since we have been busy with field trips and concerts.

In Math, we have been working on reviewing what we have learned all year. This week we have talked about the calendar and time. We will continue to work on reviewing until the end of the school year.

In Science, we have been busy exploring about air. This week we did an experiment making an air and water fountain. We confirmed that air is matter and takes up space along that air pressure can move water. We also made a “balloon rocket” and it was awesome! The students, and myself, loved it. We used fishing line and attached each end to a chair with tape, stringed through the fishing wire was a straw, attached to the straw was a gallon sized plastic bag that was open. We pumped up an oblong balloon and put it inside the plastic bag. We released the balloon and watched it sail down the fishing wire. It reminded me of a zip line with a balloon. The students had a great time and said it was their favorite science experiment so far!

Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, May 26th – Field Day (rain date 5/27)

Friday, May 28th – ½ day of school

Monday, May 31st – No School: Memorial Day

Tuesday, June 1st – Parent Share Day

2nd Grade News

May 7, 2010

In second grade this week, we were super busy! We completed our Aims Web Benchmark testing and everyone did a terrific job! We also had a great time at the Raupp Museum and learned about bartering and trading. Thanks to the parents who came to chaperone! I greatly appreciate it.

In Language Arts, we have been learning about adjectives and putting commas in a sentence that has a series. Our spelling words this week dealt with words that had endings of –dge, and –ge and make the /j/ sound. Some words were cage, lodge, hinge, and barge.

In Math, we have been busy with learning about addition and subtraction number stories, multiplication, division, and products tables. We will be testing on this chapter next Friday the 14th.

In Social Studies, we have begun chapter 8 – How Can I Be a Good Shopper? We are learning about wants and needs. We talked about the things we need and want; need: clothes, food, and a roof over our head and what we want: new video games and toys.

Don’t forget that our music concert is on Wednesday the 12th. Students need to be in our classroom at 6:30 and the performance will start at 7:00. Please make sure they wear blue jeans and a white shirt.
