November 10

This week, as well as next week,  most of our activities are related to Thanksgiving.  We saw a DVD about the first Thanksgiving and we learned why the Pilgrims celebrated.  We made a list of what we are thankful for and we copied some of the list on feathers that we put on a giant paper turkey outside of our room.  We read a book about a boy who was an artist for a Native American tribe. We made stories by drawing pictures that we copied from Native American symbols.

In math, we saw a film on You Tube about teen numbers.  We then played teen and number games on a giant number grid that was on the floor.  We used our bodies to stand on numbers.  We learned about the patterns in numbers.  All of the teens have one at the front.  All the twenties have two at the front, etc.  We learned how to play Monster Squeeze, a game that that we brought home.  We hope you are using it.  You can make numbers from 10- 20 also.  We played Roll A Turkey with a die.  The goal for the game is to see which number we shook the most.

If you have not yet scheduled a conference, please do so by calling the office.

The Halloween pictures that were taken are on my website.

This week, our activities were about Halloween.  We read a book called I Need my Monster . The children had a great time listening to the story and they made their own monster out of scraps of paper, feathers, jewels, pipe cleaners, etc. We played Halloween Bingo and our centers were about Halloween.

Halloween was a huge success.  Our room moms planned many fun activities for us at our parties.  We enjoyed dressing up and parading in front of parents and the rest of the school.  We also liked watching the older children’s  parade.

This week, we started to talk about how to write a sentence, leaving spaces between words and trying to sound out what the children wanted to write. Some children are hesitant about taking the risk of putting down letters.  I do not correct their spelling for this reason.  I would rather that they try instead of being afraid to try.  I celebrate all their tries.

We are starting to talk about Thanksgiving. The children have learned about the Native Americans helping the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving feast. We made great paper Pilgrims and Native Americans, which are now on the outside bulletin board.

October 21, 2011

This week we started to read in reading groups.  Every week we will learn a new strategy which will help us be better good readers.  This week we learned that it is important to learn about the characters in the stories we read.  We look  at pictures in the stories to help us.  We reviewed popcorn words in the stories.

While we are in groups,  parents help us learn academic skills by teaching us at centers.  This week we played games about letter recognition, rhyming, and  putting numbers in order.

Many of our projects this week and next will be about Halloween.

Mrs. Murdach and I used the Activotes to assess basic Kindergarten skills taught so far.

October 14, 2011

This week we learned about how to make and be a friend. We also learned what we can do with friends.  We read a book about Simon, Molly and Hester.  Simon got angry because he thought Hester was taking away his friend Molly.  He got angry, so we discussed how we use our words when we are angry.

Our new  letter this week was P, so we made pumpkins, painted with pink paint and  learned about the penny.  The new popcorn word is a.  We have learned the following popcorn words: I, we the, can and like.  We are starting to put the words into sentences.  Our color word this week was brown, which ties in with learning about Fall.

In computer lab, we made patterns with shapes. We started learning AB patterns.  We are now learning ABB patterns.

Activotes

Both AM and PM Classes watched a Brainpop Jr. video on the life of author, Dr. Seuss.  It was a very well developed mini clip movie that provided a lot of time for questions and discussion.  The classes use  Active Voters in which formal and informal assessments can be utilized.

Week ending September 16

If you did not receive a packet for picture Day which is on September 26, please let me know.

This week was the first week that we had a “Child of the Week”. Each Friday, we pick a student, who gets to take home a bag with a stuffed animal in it.  The child gets to write a story of what he/she did over the weekend with the animal.  The child also fills out two papers about what the child likes.  On the following Monday, he/she gets to bring in a favorite toy and book, with the story.  We read and show everything on that Monday, and the child is the leader for the day and “Child of the Week” for the rest of the week.

In reading, we read a  book called “hands”.  Some of our witing pages this week were about what we can do with our hands and other body parts.  On Fridays, we usually compare and contrast two stories that we read. This week, we made a list of what was the same and what was different about Hands and a poem about measuring.

On Thursdays, we read a fable or folk tale. We re-read and saw a movie about The Gingerbread Boy and Baby. We made a list and drew pictures of the characters who chased him. We are beginning to copy from the Promethean board, and we put popcorn lines around our popcorn words that pop up a lot.

In math, we are learning to make AB patterns.  We all made movable patterns on a game on the Promethean Board. We also made patterns with unifix cubes. At the beginning of the week, we played with Pattern Blocks.

In technology, Mrs. Murdach had us use an app called Word Families.  We worked on letter recognition and sounds.

Next week, we will celebrating Peace Day.  We colored pinwheels that the whole school will be displaying for peace.
