Curriculum
Every Day, Every Student.
Every learning experience in D102 begins with our students in mind. When D102 develops and reviews curriculum, it is in alignment with the district vision, our Portrait of a Graduate and our annual goals. By focusing on high levels of academic engagement, the inclusion of every learner in meaningful ways, and a strong, connected learning community, D102 is able to foster learning environments in which every student can learn and thrive.
D102 Curriculum Guides
The Illinois Learning Standards define what all students in all Illinois public schools should know and be able to do in the seven core areas as a result of their elementary and secondary schooling. D102's "Curriculum at a Glance" docs are available below.
Collaborative Curriculum Work
Subject Area Learning Teams (SALTs) meet and develop annual action steps to move the district towards its Vision and Future Planning goals. These steps are submitted to the Teaching and Learning Council (TLC) for approval. These teams meet throughout the year to work on the initiatives and present the results to TLC for discussion and final approval. Outcomes include new and revised curriculum and assessments, new programs or instructional models, updated resources, and recommendations for professional development to name a few.
Teaching and Learning Council (TLC)
The Teaching and Learning Council (TLC) is representative of district faculty, administration, board and parent/community members. TLC monitors and approves the curriculum development process. It also provides input into professional development to build teacher capacity and ensure efficacy and fidelity of curriculum and resource implementation.
Subject Area Leadership Teams (SALT)
SALTs (Strategic or Subject Area Leadership Teams) are comprised of teacher and administrator representatives. Their purpose is to continually assess and provide input into the curriculum and the resources used across the district. Currently, the district has two subject-area SALTs (mathematics and literacy) as well as three strategic area SALTs (Special Education, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, and Social-Emotional Learning).
Task Forces
Task Forces are also developed to address specific needs that surface in the SALTs. During the 24-25 school year, a Dual Language Task Force will be evaluating our district's bilingual programming and planning for enhanced language programs across the district.
Illinois Acceleration Act
On July 1, 2018 Public Act 100-0421 took effect. This act states that all school districts will have a set policy and procedures which guides how acceleration is determined and supported within the context of school. The policy for this Act can be found in our Board Policy manual under section 6:135. The practices of the accelerated ACT are communicated on this document. If you have any questions regarding the accelerated placement act, please reach out to our District Coordinator of SEL and Family Engagement, Eli Rogers at erogers@d102.org.
Curriculum Objection
If you have a question or concern about a topic or resource in your child's curriculum, please speak with your child's teacher and/ or the building principal. If you continue to have concerns, please complete this curriculum objection form, which will be sent to the D102 Department of Learning and Growth.
History Class: Learning to embrace the unique perspectives of others
Aptakisic 8th-grade students re-enacted the Roaring ’20s. Students chose a character from the 1920s and researched and became that character for a day. During class, they met and visited as celebrities from the 1920s. They interviewed one another providing details about the character’s history and relevance.
