Multilingualism in D102
Multilingual Belief Statement
A student’s primary language and prior experiences set a firm foundation for learning. Because languages interact, our district acknowledges the asset that a plurilingual childhood experience provides students. An understanding and proficiency in more than one language will benefit our students as they move towards realizing the attributes outlined in the D102 Portrait of a Graduate.
Language Opportunities in D102
Spanish World Language Program
Students at Aptakisic Junior High School in 7th and 8th grade have the opportunity to learn Spanish as a world language. Our exceptional teachers use authentic resources and highly engaging language instruction to expose students to beginning Spanish as well as the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.
Programs for English Learners
Students who are still acquiring the English language are supported in many ways in D102. Please visit our "EL" page for more information. Kindergartners who have Spanish as a home language may participate in our Spanish extended day program.
Expanding Language Opportunities
In the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, the D102 community identified language learning as a priority area. During the 23-24 school year, a Language Task Force began exploring the possibilities of expanding language programming to younger grade levels. This work will continue in the 24-25 school year. The Language Task Force is comprised of teachers, administrators, and D102 families who are interested in helping the district grow its language opportunities. We look forward to sharing more with you as we continue to plan.
Learn a Language from our Staff or Students!
D102 has many multilingual staff members and students! Many of them have put together learning videos for you to have a taste of their language and culture! Visit our "D102 Cultivates" project here.
